Who this is about

Squiggleworks is an app that turns a described scene into a printable colouring page. This policy explains what happens to information when you use it, and covers both the app and this website. If anything here is unclear, please ask us using the contact details at the bottom.

We do not use accounts

The first time the app needs to draw something, it quietly asks our server for an anonymous ID. That ID is a random string of characters. It is not connected to your name, your email address, your phone number or your Apple or Google account, because we never receive any of those.

Alongside the ID, the app keeps a secret token on the device so our server knows the request came from your copy of the app. We only ever store a one way scrambled version of that token, so even we cannot read it back.

What we store on our server

That is the complete list of what our database holds for you:

• the random ID described above, and the scrambled token
• which kind of device it is, recorded only as "ios", "android" or "web"
• the date the ID was created
• how many pictures have been made, so we can apply the free and monthly limits
• whether there is an active subscription, which product it is, and when it renews or ends
• short lived counters that stop the service being overloaded

There is nothing else. We do not store your drawings, the words you type, your characters, your photos or your voice.

Where your drawings live

Every colouring page, character and book you make is saved on your own device, in the app's private storage. It is not uploaded to us and we cannot see it. If you delete the app, all of it is deleted with it, so do print or share anything you want to keep first.

What is sent away to make a picture

We do not run the artificial intelligence ourselves. To create a page, our server passes the following to OpenAI, who draw it and send it straight back:

• the scene you described, typed or spoken
• the names and descriptions of any saved characters that scene mentions
• any photo you have chosen, if you asked for a page or a character to be made from a photo
• the existing page, if you asked for a change to a drawing you already have

The finished picture passes through our server on its way back to your device and is not kept. OpenAI process this material in order to provide the drawing, under their own terms. You can read how they handle data in the OpenAI terms and privacy policies, which have a separate version for each part of the world. We do not control their systems, so please read their policy if you would like the detail.

Photographs

Turning a photo into a colouring page is optional. It only happens when a photo is deliberately chosen from the device. That photo is shrunk on the device and then sent to OpenAI as described above so the drawing can be made. We never store it, and the app does not browse or upload your photo library on its own.

Please think about this before choosing a photograph of a child, since it does leave the device and go to OpenAI to be redrawn. If you would rather nothing left the device, describe the character in words instead, which works just as well.

Talking to Squiggle

The voice feature lets a child say out loud what they would like to draw. While a call is running, the microphone audio goes directly from the device to OpenAI, who listen and reply in speech. We do not record the call, keep the audio, or keep a written copy of it. The conversation on screen disappears when the call ends. Calls stop automatically after five minutes, or sooner if nobody is speaking.

Subscriptions and payment

Subscriptions are sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and are managed for us by RevenueCat. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see or hold your card details, billing address or store account.

So that a purchase unlocks the right copy of the app, we give RevenueCat the random ID described earlier. RevenueCat then tells our server that the ID has an active subscription. Their handling of data is described in the RevenueCat privacy policy.

Children

Squiggleworks is made for young children to use, with a grown up nearby. We have deliberately built it so that a child cannot hand over personal information: there is no sign up, no profile, no chat with other people, no advertising and no way to type an email address into it. Settings and anything that spends money sit behind a question a young child cannot answer.

Because we never collect names, ages, contact details or locations, we hold no personal profile of any child using the app.

No tracking or advertising

There are no advertisements in Squiggleworks, and we do not sell or share information with anybody for marketing. We do not use analytics tools, advertising identifiers or third party trackers, in the app or on this website. This website loads no third party content at all, sets no cookies and does not need a cookie banner.

Hosting and security

Our server runs on Cloudflare, who host the service and keep short technical logs of requests, such as internet addresses, in order to run the network and defend it from attack. Everything travels encrypted over HTTPS. You can read the Cloudflare privacy policy for more.

How long we keep things

The record attached to your random ID stays until you ask us to remove it, because it is what remembers your remaining free pages and your subscription. Counts of pictures made are kept per month so limits can reset. The short lived counters that protect the service are cleared within minutes.

Your choices and your rights

Deleting the app removes everything held on the device, including all your drawings, and the ID stored with it.

Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to ask for a copy of what we hold, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. Because we hold so little, and none of it identifies you by name, the honest answer to "what do you have about me?" is the list further up this page. If you would like the record for your ID deleted, please email us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how any of this works, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Where a change matters, we will say so in the app as well.
